Open AI's CEO Sam Altman-Backed Startup Humane Gears Up To Launch AI Pin With Indian Telcos

Humane, the startup backed by Sam Altman, is in advanced discussions with Indian telecom operators for the launch of its innovative Humane AI Pin device. Imran Chaudhari, Chairman and President at Humane, expressed optimism, stating that they aim to make official announcements by the end of this year. The overwhelming interest from India, according to Chaudhari, has made it the largest market for Humane by far.

Founded in 2017 by former Apple executives Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, Humane secured around $200 million in funding from notable backers, including Microsoft, Qualcomm Ventures, and Sam Altman from OpenAI. The Ai Pin, priced at $699 with a $24 monthly subscription, offers users a unique experience by providing a dedicated phone number and unlimited data to power various AI-powered queries. T-Mobile is serving as the launch partner in the US market, and recent plans include venturing into the international arena with a deal signed with South Korean carrier SK Telecom.

The Humane AI Pin is a compact device designed to be clipped onto clothing or accessories. It utilizes a combination of voice, gesture, and touch inputs, granting users access to an array of AI services such as search, translation, navigation, and more. What sets it apart from conventional consumer tech products is its ability to enable users to communicate with an AI chatbot using voice and laser ink technology.

Imran Chaudhari shed light on the startup's collaboration with partners to explore various use cases, citing the medical field as an example. The Humane AI Pin is being developed for diagnostic purposes, leveraging its contextual compute capability. Chaudhari emphasized that the AI Pin represents a novel way for people to interact with technology, offering more than smartphones can provide.

"People want something new beyond smartphones... they want some presence and freedom. We're really on technology now, but it just takes us away. If we have a better way to integrate technology in our lives, most of us would want it," Chaudhari stated, highlighting the growing demand for innovative tech solutions that go beyond the traditional smartphone experience.

However, Chaudhari clarified that the Humane AI Pin is not intended to disrupt the smartphone market but rather serve as a companion device. "It is designed so that it can complement smartphones. It is designed to allow you to liberate yourself from that... it is designed in a way that it's people's only device. Some people use it to have a better relationship with their device," he explained.

The startup envisions a global market with ample opportunities for advancements in how people interact with technology. The Humane AI Pin, with its unique features and capabilities, aims to redefine the way individuals engage with AI and technology in their daily lives. As discussions with Indian telecom operators progress, the anticipation for the Humane AI Pin's debut in India continues to grow, marking a potential turning point in the tech industry's evolution.
