OpenAI India managing director appointment: Prabhjeet Singh to lead growth from September

OpenAI has appointed Prabhjeet Singh as Managing Director for India, with the role starting in September. He will lead performance across consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement, and operations, reporting to Kiran Mani. OpenAI said the move reflects continued investment in India and support for the country’s wider AI ecosystem.

OpenAI has named Prabhjeet Singh as Managing Director for India, according to a statement issued Friday. OpenAI said India is among its top-priority markets. Singh will become the company’s most senior leader in the country. The role covers consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement, and operations.

OpenAI said Singh will join in September and will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for APAC Asia Pacific. The company said Singh’s focus will include building partnerships and supporting India’s wider AI ecosystem. OpenAI also said Singh will help more consumers, businesses, institutions, and government bodies use AI.

The appointment forms part of OpenAI’s ongoing investment in India, the company said. OpenAI is working to expand partnerships and deepen work with businesses and the developer community. The company is placing larger bets on India’s fast-growing market for AI adoption. OpenAI said the new leadership role will support these efforts.

Singh joins OpenAI after serving at Uber as President of India and South Asia. At Uber, Singh led the mobility business across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. OpenAI did not detail Singh’s full mandate beyond growth and partnerships. It said Singh will be responsible for overall performance in India.

OpenAI India plans, office and market focus

OpenAI announced its first office in New Delhi in November 2025. The company has described India as a key market for future growth. The statement linked the appointment to that priority. OpenAI has been increasing its presence as AI adoption rises across sectors in India.

Sam Altman has spoken publicly about India’s pace of AI use. "Whats happening in India with AI is really quite amazing,\" Altman had said. OpenAI said it plans to invest more in India. The company has also highlighted interest across businesses, institutions, and government bodies.

Altman spoke at the India AI Summit in February this year about technology adoption in India. Altman said the country was investing across multiple layers of AI. \"The countrys conviction to invest in everything from the infrastructure layer to the model layer to the application layer on top, and the rapid adoption of the tools by people here is really quite something,\" Altman had said at the time.

OpenAI said Singh will help connect the company with India’s AI ecosystem through partnerships and engagement. The company linked the move to its broader plans in the country. Singh is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad. OpenAI said the role will support adoption across consumers and enterprises.
