OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Unveils ChatGPT's Mature Content Policy And New Features

OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman announces that ChatGPT will offer mature content for verified users in December. New features will enhance user experience while ensuring safety for vulnerable individuals.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has announced that starting in December, ChatGPT will permit mature content for users who have verified their age. This move is part of OpenAI's strategy to relax restrictions and treat adult users appropriately. Altman shared these updates during a media tour at the Stargate AI data center in Abilene, Texas.

Altman explained that the company has been cautious with ChatGPT due to mental health concerns. However, they now have new tools to address these issues safely. As a result, OpenAI plans to ease restrictions for most users while maintaining safeguards for those in vulnerable mental states.

ChatGPT's New Features

In the coming weeks, OpenAI will introduce a version of ChatGPT that allows users to customise the chatbot's tone and personality. Altman stated that users could choose how human-like or friendly they want their interactions to be. This flexibility aims to enhance user experience without pushing usage limits.

Responding to comments from users, Altman clarified that mature content would only be available upon request. He emphasised that almost all users can enjoy ChatGPT without adverse effects. However, he acknowledged that a small percentage of users might face serious issues due to mental fragility.

Ensuring User Safety

Altman noted the importance of protecting mentally fragile users while providing freedom for others. He mentioned that even 0.1% of a billion users represents a significant number needing protection. OpenAI aims to balance safety with user autonomy by developing enhanced tools for safeguarding vulnerable individuals.

Meanwhile, Meta has introduced measures on Instagram and its AI tools to limit content visibility for those under 18. These filters are inspired by the PG-13 movie rating system, as reported by Reuters.

Altman reiterated OpenAI's commitment to learning how best to protect at-risk users. With improved tools, adults not at risk should have considerable freedom in using ChatGPT according to their preferences.
