Many users have faced difficulties accessing ChatGPT-4o since Saturday. But it became more serious around 4 PM on Sunday. As soon as users began using the Studio Ghibli-style image generation feature, OpenAI's servers were overwhelmed. Users started seeing an error response from the ChatGPT that said, "We apologize, an error occurred. Please try again in a few minutes."

ChatGPT went down on Sunday for users across the globe because millions of users flocked to the AI platform to create Studio Ghibli images. This global outage affected both the app and service provider. The website that tracks outages, DownDetector, reported that at least 294 users complained about issues with OpenAI's services, with 53% of the complaints related to ChatGPT.

OpenAI officially acknowledged the issue and said, "We are currently experiencing issues." It is worth noting that the company is also surprised by the number of people creating Ghibli images.
