Surda Copper Mine Operations Resume as Kendadih and Rakha Mines Prepare to Reopen This Year

The government announced that operations at the Surda copper mine in Jharkhand have resumed. Meanwhile, the Kendadih and Rakha copper mines in the state are expected to reopen this year. Hindustan Copper Ltd (HCL), a public sector company under the mines ministry, owns these mines. The reopening of Surda Mine is a crucial move towards achieving self-reliance in copper, according to Minister of State for Coal and Mine, Satish Chandra Dubey.

Surda Mine Resumes; Kendadih and Rakha Set to Reopen

Surda Mine's operation will boost employment, invigorate the local economy, and generate approximately Rs 100 crore in annual revenue. HCL plans to increase the mine's capacity from 0.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 0.9 MTPA over the next seven years. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance domestic copper production and reduce reliance on imports.

Employment Opportunities and Economic Impact

The reopening of Kendadih and Rakha mines is anticipated this year, following the Jharkhand Cabinet's approval of lease extensions. This development is expected to create 2,000 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs for local residents. The mines ministry stated that this would triple the production capacity of the Indian Copper Complex, significantly boosting local employment opportunities.

Ghanshyam Sharma, CMD of HCL, highlighted that resuming operations at Surda mine will directly employ around 1,100 individuals and indirectly benefit about 5,000 more. This initiative is seen as a vital step in revitalising the regional economy and providing substantial employment opportunities.

Investment Plans for Future Growth

HCL has committed to investing Rs 50 crore in mining operations during the fiscal year 2024-25. This capital investment aims to support the expansion plans and ensure sustainable growth in copper production. The focus on increasing mining capacity aligns with national objectives to strengthen domestic industries.

The government's efforts to restart these mines reflect a strategic approach to bolster self-sufficiency in essential minerals. By enhancing local production capabilities, India aims to reduce its dependency on imported copper, thereby strengthening its economic resilience.

The initiatives undertaken by HCL are expected to have far-reaching effects on both employment and economic growth in Jharkhand. As operations resume and expand, the region could witness significant development in infrastructure and industry-related activities.
