Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is expecting thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms along with isolated heavy rainfall in parts of South Peninsular India from April 2nd to April 6th. IMD expects heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Kerala till April 6th.
Weather Systems, Forecast and Warnings:
As per IMD, an upper air Cyclonic Circulation lies over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and a trough runs from this cyclonic circulation to southeast Madhya Pradesh in the lower tropospheric levels. Further, an upper air Cyclonic Circulation lies over southwest Madhya Pradesh in the lower tropospheric levels.
Also, an upper air trough in easterlies runs from Lakshadweep to Konkan in the lower tropospheric levels.
Under the influence of these systems and the confluence of moist winds from the Arabian sea and the Bay of Bengal in lower tropospheric levels, here's what to expect as per IMD:
- Isolated to Scattered light/moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds (speed 40-50 kmph) likely over South Peninsular India during 02nd-06th; Central India, Maharashtra, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha during 02nd-04th April.

Along similar lines, SkyMet Weathers said, Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala, and Lakshadweep have received "large excess" rainfall, while Coastal Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka also fall under the "excess" category. Over the next 3-4 days, multiple weather systems are expected to intensify rainfall across South Peninsular India.
Heavy Rainfall Expected In These Cities:
SkyMet highlighted the following:
Light to moderate rain with isolated heavy spells expected in Kerala and Tamil Nadu on April 2nd. On April 3rd rainfall will intensify, with heavy to very heavy showers likely in Telangana and Karnataka. Thunderstorms and gusty winds may accompany these downpours. April 5 onwards rain intensity may gradually decrease, but scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue over Tamil Nadu, South Karnataka, Kerala, and Rayalaseema for another week.
Skymet's note added the rains will help keep temperatures under control, ensuring pleasant weather across the region. Additionally, the soil moisture replenishment will prove beneficial for the upcoming crop season, supporting agricultural activities.
Heavy rainfall may lead to localized waterlogging and disruptions. However, the overall impact remains positive, aiding water resources and agriculture in the region, SkyMet added.
