Online messaging giant WhatsApp has intensified its crackdown on fraudulent activities, banning over 8.4 million accounts in India in a single month. This large-scale action follows an influx of reports flagging scams, suspicious behaviour, and policy violations by users.
Meta Platforms, WhatsApp's parent company, announced the decision in its latest Transparency Report, highlighting that the banned accounts were disabled between August 1 and August 31 to comply with Section 4(1)(d) and Section 3A(7) of the Information Technology Act.

Out of the total banned accounts:
1.66 million accounts were immediately blocked due to serious violations.
The remaining accounts were banned after investigations, which confirmed them to be involved in fraudulent activities.
Notably, over 1.6 million accounts were proactively removed during WhatsApp's monitoring process, even before receiving any user complaints, as they were flagged for misuse and policy violations.
Primary Reasons Behind The Account Bans
WhatsApp has outlined several primary reasons for the mass banning of accounts:
1. Violation Of Terms And Services
Accounts engaged in bulk messaging, automated spam, or impersonation were removed.
Users misusing the platform for misleading advertisements, fraudulent schemes, or unauthorized modifications were banned.
2. Illegal Activities
WhatsApp detected accounts involved in financial fraud, identity theft, and phishing scams.
Some accounts were found distributing malware or deceptive links to compromise user data.
3. User Complaints And Reports
Many accounts were banned following complaints from users regarding scams, harassment, and unsolicited messages.
WhatsApp's AI-powered detection system flagged numerous reports, leading to subsequent investigations and removals.
How To Stay Safe On WhatsApp
1. Be Mindful Of What You Share
Avoid sharing sensitive information, such as passwords or financial details, with unknown contacts.
Do not click on suspicious links, as they may lead to phishing attempts or malware downloads.
2. Watch Out For Messages from Unknown Senders
WhatsApp alerts you when you receive a message from someone not saved in your contacts.
If a message seems suspicious or includes requests for personal information, urgent payment demands, or fake giveaways, proceed with caution.
3. Adjust Your Privacy Settings
WhatsApp provides privacy options to control who can see your profile picture, status updates, and last seen status.
Regularly review and update these settings to restrict visibility to only trusted contacts.
4. Block Or Report Suspicious Contacts
If you receive inappropriate, fraudulent, or spam messages, report the contact directly to WhatsApp.
You can also block contacts to prevent further interaction.
When receiving a View Once photo or video, you have the option to report the sender from the media viewer itself.
5. Block High Volumes Of Unknown Messages
If you receive a sudden influx of messages from unknown numbers, use WhatsApp's blocking feature to filter out potential threats.
Blocking unwanted messages can also improve your device's performance and reduce spam notifications.
6. Enable Two-Step Verification
Activate two-step verification to add an extra layer of security to your account.
This feature requires a PIN code when registering WhatsApp on a new device, preventing unauthorized access.
