Pakistan-Iran talks: Sharif speaks with Pezeshkian as US delegation heads to Islamabad

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the current regional situation, including Sharif’s recent contacts with leaders in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkiye. The conversation came as President Donald Trump said a US delegation would arrive in Islamabad for a second round of talks, with no Iranian confirmation reported.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke by phone with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday. The call focused on the regional situation. It came as US President Donald Trump announced fresh US talks in Islamabad. Trump said US negotiators would arrive on Monday for a second round of discussions linked to Iran.

Pakistan-Iran talks amid US visit

According to a Prime Minister’s Office handout cited by Dawn, the call lasted about forty-five minutes. The two leaders held detailed exchanges on current regional developments. PM Sharif also reviewed recent contacts with other leaders. These included the leadership of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkiye, the PMO said.

US Iran talks in Islamabad

Trump linked the wider effort to talks in Pakistan. "My Representatives are going to Islamabad, Pakistan - They will be there tomorrow evening, for Negotiations,\" Trump said in a Truth Social post. Trump made the announcement on Sunday. The statement pointed to renewed efforts after earlier talks failed to produce a deal.

There was no confirmation from the Iranian side about Tehran’s participation in the second round of talks. The US and Iran held rare direct talks in Pakistan on April 11 and 12 in Islamabad. Those discussions aimed to end their conflict. However, the talks ended without any agreement.

Pakistan role in peace efforts and regional security

Trump’s new announcement raised hopes of extending a two-week ceasefire. The ceasefire is due to expire by Wednesday. The PMO said PM Sharif also thanked President Pezeshkian for sending a delegation for talks in Islamabad. The handout did not give details about the delegation’s schedule.

The PMO said PM Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and security. The statement said Pakistan would continue \"honest and sincere efforts\" with support from friends and partners. President Pezeshkian also thanked the PM Shehbaz and CDF Munir. The statement said both sides expected Iran-Pakistan ties to keep strengthening.
