Pakistan mediation in US Iran talks continues as Asim Munir leads delegation to Tehran

A Pakistani delegation led by Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi as part of Islamabad’s mediation efforts in the US Iran conflict. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi welcomed the group. The visit follows reports that a second round of US Iran talks could take place in Islamabad.

A Pakistani delegation led by Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Wednesday. The visit formed part of Islamabad’s attempts to ease the US-Iran conflict. The Inter Services Public Relations said the team also included Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi welcomed the delegation, Iranian media reported.

The move came as Pakistan prepared for possible fresh US-Iran engagement after talks in Islamabad ended without a deal. A day earlier, US President Donald Trump said a second round might be held in Islamabad soon. "You should stay there, really, because something could be happening over the next two days, and were more inclined to go there,\" Trump told The New York Post.

US and Iran talks in Islamabad and Pakistan mediation

Citing sources, Geo News reported that Pakistani officials and security agencies were told to arrange administration and security. The instructions were linked to the next round of talks. Pakistani officials said another round was expected in the coming days. Pakistan was making strong efforts to help both sides return to negotiations.

The US and Iran held rare direct talks in Pakistan over the weekend. The talks aimed to end their conflict but ended early Sunday without agreement. US Vice President JD Vance, who led the American delegation, said talks failed. JD Vance cited Tehran not forgoing its nuclear programme as a key issue.

Iran gave a different account of the Islamabad meeting. Iran said the talks failed because of excessive demands from the American side. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf led Iran’s delegation in long peace talks. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said proposals were raised, yet trust was not secured during this round.

US and Iran conflict and regional visits by Pakistan

The Tehran visit also coincided with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s travel schedule. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif embarked on official visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Türkiye on Wednesday. The Foreign Office said the Saudi Arabia and Qatar stops were bilateral. The plan included meetings on cooperation, plus regional peace and security.

Officials described these contacts as part of efforts to help the US and Iran reach an agreement. The goal was to end the ongoing conflict. The conflict began after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28. The developments disrupted trade and hit global energy markets, causing major uncertainty.

Pakistan’s latest steps linked diplomacy in Tehran with preparations for possible talks in Islamabad. Officials expected further engagement in the coming days. The Pakistani delegation’s arrival and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s regional visits showed parallel outreach. For now, both sides held firm positions after the earlier Islamabad meeting ended without a deal.
