PAN Holders Alert: Update Aadhaar Number by December 31, 2025, to Keep PAN Active; Act Now!

If you received your PAN card using an Aadhaar enrolment ID, you need to update your records with your actual Aadhaar number by December 31, 2025. The Income Tax Department, via a new notification from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), has made this mandatory to ensure accurate linking and data verification.

This rule applies to anyone who was issued a PAN using Aadhaar Enrolment ID before October 1, 2024. The Aadhaar enrolment ID is the temporary number you get when you apply for an Aadhaar card, before receiving the actual Aadhaar number. Now, if your PAN was issued using that temporary ID, you must replace it with your full Aadhaar number in the Income Tax records.

What Is The Main Purpose Of This Pan Update?

The government is working to ensure transparency and reduce duplication in tax records. Linking PAN and Aadhaar allows smoother verification, better tracking of financial transactions, and prevention of tax evasion.

If you fail to update your Aadhaar number by the deadline, your PAN could become inoperative starting January 1, 2026. This means you won't be able to File income tax returns (ITR), Claim refunds

However, more clarity may be issued by the Income Tax Department soon. So in order to avoid unnecessary issues like delayed refunds, inoperative PAN, and invalid ITRs, make sure to update your Aadhaar number with the Income Tax Department by December 31, 2025.
