Pension To Senior Citizens, Widows To Increase After NSAP Rejig
With the centre proposing a major rejig in the National Social Assistance Programme or NSAP, the pension pay out to senior citizens, widows as well as those with disabilities may increase.
After the changes are brought into force, senior citizens aged above 80 years may be entitled to get a pension of Rs. 1000 per month in contrast to Rs. 500. Further, those aged up to 79 years will get Rs. 500 per month as against Rs. 200 previously.
"We are considering a holistic revamp of the scheme," the official said. "Proposals being deliberated upon include raising the pension amount, moving to SECC data for identifying beneficiaries and adopting 100% DBT (direct benefit transfer) under the schemes," the official told the leading business daily.
With the increase in the number of beneficiaries by another 20 million, the liability of the exchequer will see an immense increment. For social security as part of NSAP, the rural ministry on an yearly basis incurs over Rs. 9000 crore on as many as 31 million beneficiaries.
