PepsiCo's decision to cut palm oil usage in Lay's chips has ignited a wave of optimism among advocates for healthier snack options. Reverberating through social media platforms, the announcement by social media influencer Revant Himatsingka, popularly known as "Food Pharmer," hailed it as a "big win" for India's snack industry.
Palm oil, a widely used ingredient in chips, biscuits, and other processed foods, has long been under scrutiny for its potential adverse effects on heart health when consumed excessively. Himatsingka's advocacy shed light on the disparity between Lay's products in India and the US, where the latter opts for healthier oil alternatives.

However, PepsiCo India's clarification revealed that the company had already embarked on trials for alternative oil blends as early as 2023. By incorporating a blend of sunflower oil and palmolein oil, PepsiCo positioned itself as a pioneer in adopting healthier oil alternatives in the Indian food industry.
The ripple effect of PepsiCo's initiative extends beyond its own brand, with local snack makers like Bingo and Haldiram feeling the pressure to follow suit. As consumer awareness grows regarding the impact of unhealthy ingredients, FMCG companies are facing heightened scrutiny in India. This move signals a paradigm shift towards prioritising health-conscious choices in the food industry.
The Economic Times reported on May 9 that PepsiCo's trials aim to replace "bad oils" in Lay's with a healthier mix, including sunflower oil and palm olein, while also targeting a reduction in salt content. Notably, in its largest market, the US, PepsiCo emphasises the use of "heart-healthy" oils such as sunflower, corn, and canola oil for Lay's products.
What is the distinction between palm oil and palmolein?
Palm oil and palmolein are both obtained from the fruit of the oil palm tree, but they are distinct compounds with unique properties. Palm oil is derived from the flesh of a palm fruit. It is semi-solid at room temperature due to its high saturated fat content. Palmolein, on the other hand, is a sort of palm oil that has been refined into a liquid form. It is produced by fractionating palm oil to separate the liquid (olein) and solid (stearin) components. It stays liquid at ambient temperature.
PepsiCo's proactive measures underscore the evolving landscape of consumer preferences and regulatory scrutiny in India. With increased awareness of the health risks associated with certain ingredients, consumers are demanding greater transparency and healthier alternatives from FMCG companies.
This trend is not unique to PepsiCo: Nestle India recently faced criticism over high sugar levels in certain products, prompting the company to announce a 30% reduction in sugar content and the introduction of new options with lower sugar levels. Similarly, Indian companies like MDH and Everest are under investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration for alleged high levels of cancer-causing pesticides in their products.
The impact of these oils on health and product quality is frequently considered while selecting between them. While sunflower oil has nutritional advantages over palm oil due to reduced saturated fats, she notes that its weaker oxidative stability may influence the product's durability and taste.
As the Indian food industry navigates these challenges, PepsiCo's proactive stance sets a precedent for other players to prioritise health and transparency in their product offerings. With consumers increasingly gravitating towards healthier choices, the shift towards cleaner ingredient labels and responsible sourcing practices is poised to reshape the future of the Indian snack market.
