International Potato Center Establishes New Branch in Agra to Boost Potato Production
The CIP International Potato Center, based in Peru, is planning to open a new branch in Agra. This initiative involves an investment of approximately Rs 120 crore on a 10-hectare plot, as announced by the Uttar Pradesh government. The Agra centre aims to provide high-quality potato seeds, which will improve crop yields and boost farmers' incomes.

The establishment of this centre is part of the efforts led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's government, with support from the central government. It will focus on addressing the shortage of potato seeds and developing varieties that are both highly productive and suitable for processing. Farmers will also have the chance to learn advanced techniques to enhance their productivity.
Benefits for Farmers and Neighbouring Regions
Uttar Pradesh, being India's largest potato producer, stands to gain significantly from this development. The state practices double-cropping in several districts like Kannauj and Farrukhabad. Neighbouring states such as Bihar and West Bengal, along with other South Asian countries that grow potatoes, are also expected to benefit greatly from this initiative.
Despite Uttar Pradesh leading in total potato production, West Bengal has a higher yield per hectare, producing 29.9 metric tonnes compared to UP's 25.48 metric tonnes. The presence of dedicated research centres like the one in Agra can help close this productivity gap.
Potato Cultivation and Economic Impact
Potato farming is widespread across all districts in Uttar Pradesh, with key commercial areas including Kannauj, Farrukhabad, Agra, Firozabad, Mathura, Aligarh, Meerut, Bulandshahr, Bareilly, Lucknow, and Barabanki. Potatoes are a staple in Indian cuisine and are essential in many vegetable dishes.
Although potatoes are generally affordable throughout the year, their high demand sometimes results in shortages that attract media attention. The introduction of cost-effective sea exports is expected to stabilise supply and reduce such shortages and related concerns.
Government Initiatives for Potato Farmers
The Yogi government has shown a strong commitment to addressing challenges faced by potato farmers from the beginning. Efforts include transparent licensing processes for cold storage facilities and the development of mega food parks and processing clusters. These initiatives reflect rapid progress in enhancing storage and value-added processing capabilities.
This new branch of the CIP International Potato Center in Agra represents a significant step towards improving potato cultivation techniques and yields. It promises economic benefits not only for Uttar Pradesh but also for neighbouring regions and countries involved in potato farming.
