OMCs Face Massive Loss Due To Crude Oil Price Rally

The steep rise in crude oil price is squeezing India's fuel retailers, who are holding pump rates. Despite global benchmarks climbing above $100 per barrel from around $75, petrol and diesel prices did not change for consumers in March and April. This freeze has left oil marketing companies absorbing most of the shock so far.

As per media reports, the central government is trying to spread the strain between consumers, public finances and companies. The government wants to prevent a sudden jump in transport and household fuel costs across India, even as international markets remain volatile and uncertain over supplies.

OMCs' Losses Deepen Amid Crude Oil Price Rally

Financial pressure on oil marketing companies such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum is growing. These firms are estimated to be losing almost Rs 30,000 crore each month. "OMCs are facing under-recoveries of nearly 30,000 crore per month," India Today quoted a source.

The gap between regulated petrol diesel price at the pump and higher import costs has widened over recent months. Because of this, companies are reporting heavy daily losses. The problem worsened as crude oil price moved beyond $100 per barrel, making every litre sold at current retail rates more unprofitable.

An earlier excise duty cut on petrol and diesel gave some temporary breathing space to these companies. That move reduced part of the crude oil price impact on their books, but did not fully offset it. As international rates stay elevated, under-recoveries continue and industry players remain under sustained financial strain.

Crude Oil Price Rally

Brent crude oil prices have seen a sharp surge over the past two to three months. The commodity used to trade close to $70 per barrel. However, brent crude futures saw a sharp rally in March and April. Brent crude futures was trading above $106 per barrel on Friday, May 25, as per Trading Economics. The sharp rally in crude oil prices came amid Iran US negotiations uncertainty and Strait of Hormuz closure.
