A new pilot project in Kuttanad aims to enhance the livelihoods of local fish farmers by introducing modern aquaculture practices and providing extensive training.
Union Fisheries Minister George Kurian has unveiled a pilot initiative in Kuttanad to boost local fish farmers' livelihoods. This programme, discussed at a meeting at the ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), aims to integrate modern and traditional aquaculture methods to rejuvenate the local economy. The project will include integrated and cage fish farming, the eco-friendly "one fish, one paddy" method, and biofloc fish farming.

Fish Farmers Producers Organisations (FFPOs) will be established to empower local communities and enhance operational efficiency. "Enhancing the livelihoods of the region’s farmers is the primary goal of this initiative," Kurian stated. The project will also focus on training farmers in aquaculture skills through extensive programmes.
Focus on Aquaculture and Employment
The initiative aims to encourage start-ups in post-harvest activities such as processing, cleaning, packing, and fish trade. This approach is expected to create employment opportunities and add value to the produce. Given Kuttanad's diverse aquatic environments, the project will be divided into freshwater and brackish water farming practices.
The division will cater to the distinct conditions of Upper and Lower Kuttanad. Premier research institutions like ICAR institutes, central agencies, and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) will provide technical and scientific support. This collaboration aims to ensure effective implementation of the project.
Technical Support and Implementation
A detailed project report will be prepared promptly to facilitate swift execution. Kurian noted that this initiative is expected to bring significant and sustainable economic benefits to the region. The expertise of various research institutions will be crucial in providing necessary support for the project's success.
The meeting was attended by former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Fisheries Development Commissioner Dr Mohammed Koya, CMFRI Director Dr Grinson George, CMFRI Principal Scientist Dr Imelda Joseph, and representatives from various ICAR fisheries institutes, central government agencies, and KVKs.
