Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has indicated that India is considering a domestic tax option on certain sectors and using that levy to support the green energy transition to deal with the European Union's carbon tax.
EU's Carbon Tax Criticized

Goyal criticized the European Union's decision to impose a carbon tax on certain sectors like steel, saying it is ill-conceived and would impact the manufacturing sector of the EU. He believes that the EU will eventually realize the flaws in the carbon tax and will have to drop it.
India-EU Dialogue on Carbon Tax
Goyal stated that India is in dialogue with the EU on the issue of carbon tax and is trying to understand more about it. He assured the industry that the government is fully seized of the issue and is working to protect their interests.
Domestic Tax Option
The minister said that India is exploring the option of imposing a domestic tax on certain sectors to take care of equating with European taxes on carbon emissions. This tax would be used to support India's green energy transition, which would indirectly help exporters transition to cleaner energies and reduce their carbon footprint. Goyal believes that this approach would eliminate the need for additional CBAM.
Concerns and Negotiations
Goyal expressed concerns about the uncertainty surrounding the carbon tax and its potential impact on Indian exports. He emphasized that India is negotiating with the EU to ensure that the tax is not priced the same in India as it is in Europe. The minister assured the industry that the government is working to keep the taxes at home and utilize them for India's own green energy transition, which would mitigate the uncompetitive edge in exports to Europe.
India's consideration of a domestic tax option to counter the EU's carbon tax is a significant development in the ongoing trade relationship between the two regions. The government's efforts to protect the interests of Indian exporters and promote a green energy transition are commendable. The outcome of the negotiations between India and the EU on this issue will have far-reaching implications for trade and the environment.
