Union Minister Piyush Goyal has accused the Punjab government of diverting wheat stocks meant for poor families to private mills and the West Bengal government of misusing funds sent by the Centre.
In a concerning turn of events, Union Minister Piyush Goyal has raised serious allegations against the governments of Punjab and West Bengal. Goyal, who holds the consumer affairs portfolio, accused the Punjab government of diverting wheat stocks meant for distribution to poor families to private mills. He further alleged that the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government is misusing funds provided by the Centre for other purposes.

Punjab Government Accused of Diverting Wheat Stocks
Goyal asserted that the Punjab government is not distributing wheat through local fair price shops as intended but instead diverting it to private mills. He expressed concern that this wheat is being converted into atta flour, and there are reports of high-quality government wheat being mixed with poor-quality wheat. Goyal highlighted that the Punjab government is required to distribute wheat grain through the public distribution system so that the poor can purchase it at affordable prices.
West Bengal Government Under Fire for Misusing Funds
In the case of West Bengal, Goyal alleged that the state government diverts funds sent by the Centre for other purposes and often fails to follow established norms, such as providing utilization certificates. He questioned why the state government complains about the non-release of funds when it does not adhere to proper procedures and utilize funds for their intended purposes. Goyal emphasized that the central government cannot release fresh funds unless the state government follows the process and provides utilization certificates.
Urgent Action Demanded
Goyal expressed his hope that the Punjab government would cease the alleged practice of diverting wheat stocks. He has been continuously writing to the state government in this regard. In the case of West Bengal, Goyal urged the state government to follow laid down norms and ensure proper utilization of funds for the benefit of the people.
The allegations made by Union Minister Piyush Goyal have brought to light serious concerns regarding the misuse of central funds and wheat stocks by the governments of Punjab and West Bengal. These accusations highlight the need for transparency, accountability, and adherence to established norms in the distribution of essential commodities and utilization of public funds. It is crucial that the state governments address these allegations promptly and take necessary corrective measures to ensure that the intended beneficiaries receive the support they deserve.
