Earlier discussions around visa-free travel to Thailand for Indians in 2026 generated considerable excitement, as visitors could stay in the country for up to 60 days without going through a lengthy visa process. However, Thai authorities have recently begun reviewing their tourism entry framework amid concerns over overstays and the misuse of tourist privileges.

According to the latest developments, Thailand is tightening entry requirements, increasing scrutiny at immigration checkpoints, and revising stay conditions for certain categories of visitors. Under the new framework approved by the Thai Cabinet, India is expected to return to the Visa on Arrival (VoA) category.

Once the changes are officially implemented, Indian travellers will be required to obtain a Visa on Arrival, pay the applicable visa fee, and present supporting documents upon entry. Immigration officials may also ask visitors to provide proof of onward or return travel, hotel bookings, evidence of sufficient funds for their stay, and a clear travel itinerary.

In addition to the visa changes, Thailand is embracing digital solutions to make the arrival process more efficient. The country's Immigration Bureau is developing a mobile application called the Thailand Immigration Management (THIM) app, which will enable foreign visitors to complete key immigration formalities before boarding their flights.

Using the app, travellers will be able to submit personal and travel details electronically and generate a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before reaching the country. The initiative is expected to reduce paperwork, minimise manual data entry, and speed up processing at immigration counters. The THIM app is currently being tested in a pilot phase and is expected to be fully rolled out by August 2026.
