Planning To Visit SBI? Bank Branches Likely Closed For 6 Days Next Week May 23-28; Check Bank Holiday Details

Customers who are planning for bank visits from tomorrow onwards must note that SBI bank branches next week may face major inconvenience as most SBI branches are expected to remain shut for up to six consecutive days between May 23 and May 28 due to weekends, a proposed staff strike, and Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) bank holiday.

SBI Bank Holiday

The extended SBI bank holidays period is likely to impact branch banking services including cheque clearances, passbook updates, cash deposits, loan processing, and other in-person banking activities. However, SBI online banking, UPI transactions, internet banking, mobile banking, and ATM services are expected to function normally during the closure period.

SBI Bank Holidays List: May 23 To May 28

May 23, Saturday: Fourth Saturday bank holiday
May 24, Sunday: Weekly bank holiday
May 25, Monday: Proposed SBI Staff Federation strike
May 26, Tuesday: Proposed SBI Staff Federation strike
May 27, Wednesday: Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) holiday
May 28: Thursday, Bakrid second-day holiday in some regions including Jammu & Kashmir

Reason Behind the Bank Strike By SBI Employees

According to reports, the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation has proposed a two-day nationwide strike on May 25 and May 26. The union has raised several demands and concerns related to employee welfare and banking operations.

The top issues raised by the federation reportedly include:

  • Recruitment-related concerns
  • Outsourcing of banking jobs
  • Selection of NPS fund managers
  • Equality-related issues
  • Review of SBI career progression policies

However, customers should note that the strike is currently "proposed," and branch closures may vary across regions. Some SBI branches may continue to function depending on local participation levels. Customers are advised to confirm operational status directly with their nearest SBI branch before visiting.

Bakrid Bank Holidays May Differ Across States

Adding to the disruption, Eid al-Adha 2026, also known as Bakrid, is expected to be observed on different dates in different parts of India depending on moon sighting traditions.

While many states may observe the Bakrid holiday on May 27, some regions could celebrate the festival on May 28. In Jammu & Kashmir, both May 27 and May 28 are expected to remain official bank holidays.

What SBI Services Will Continue During The Bank Holiday Period?

Even though physical branch operations may remain suspended for multiple days, SBI customers will still be able to access several digital banking services without interruption.

The following SBI services are expected to remain active:

  • SBI YONO app
  • SBI internet banking
  • UPI payments
  • ATM cash withdrawals
  • Online fund transfers
  • Mobile banking services

Digital transactions, bill payments, and online banking activities are unlikely to be affected during the SBI holiday period.
Businesses and traders who depend heavily on branch banking services may especially need to plan ahead due to the possibility of back-to-back SBI holidays and strike-related disruptions.
