More than 130 companies have offered nearly 50,000 internship positions through the Prime Minister Internship Scheme portal. Registration for applicants will commence on October 12, as per sources. The portal was opened on October 3 for companies to list these opportunities. Notable companies like Jubilant Foodworks, Eicher Motor, Larsen & Toubro, Tech Mahindra, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Bajaj Finance, and Muthoot Finance are participating.

The internships span 22 sectors, with the most opportunities in oil, gas & energy, followed by travel & hospitality. Other sectors include automotive, banking and financial services, infrastructure & construction, manufacturing & industrial, aviation and defence. Sources from the corporate affairs ministry provided this information.
Internship Opportunities Surge
Before the portal opens for applicants on October 12, there has been a notable increase in available internships. The number of opportunities rose from about 16,000 on October 7 to nearly 50,000 by October 9. This surge highlights the growing interest from companies in offering internships through this scheme.
The internships are available in over 20 fields such as operations management, production & manufacturing, maintenance, and sales & marketing. This diversity ensures that candidates from various educational backgrounds can find suitable positions.
Geographical Spread and Financial Details
Internships are accessible across 650 districts in 36 states and Union Territories. This wide geographical spread ensures that candidates from different regions can participate without relocating far from home. The scheme's pilot project is estimated to cost around Rs 800 crore and will begin on December 2.
The government plans to cover 1.25 lakh candidates in the current financial year ending March 2025. Announced in the Union Budget 2024, the scheme will be implemented via the online portal www.pminternship.mca.gov.in developed by the corporate affairs ministry.
Long-term Goals and Financial Assistance
The government aims to provide internships to 1 crore candidates aged between 21-24 years over five years. Each intern will receive monthly financial assistance of Rs 5,000 for a year and a one-time grant of Rs 6,000. This financial support is designed to ease the burden on interns during their training period.
This initiative reflects a significant effort by the government to enhance skill development among young professionals. By offering diverse opportunities across multiple sectors and regions, it aims to bridge the gap between education and employment for many aspiring individuals.
