Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tasked teachers with promoting swadeshi products among students. He encourages schools to celebrate Swadeshi Day and engage in activities that foster local pride and support for Make in India initiatives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently urged teachers to take on a unique assignment: promoting swadeshi products. He suggested that educators lead initiatives with students to boost the Make in India and vocal for local movements. During a conversation with National Teacher awardees, Modi proposed celebrating events like Swadeshi Day or Swadeshi Week in schools, where students could bring and discuss local products from their homes.

Modi emphasised the importance of using indigenous materials in art and craft classes to instil pride in Indian-made goods. He encouraged discussions about the origins and significance of swadeshi products to deepen understanding. "There should be interaction between students and local artisans, highlighting the value of indigenous crafts and manufacturing passed down through generations," he stated. Made in India gifts for occasions like birthdays can foster pride in local products.
Promoting Self-Reliance
The Prime Minister highlighted the need for boards outside homes and shops declaring "har ghar swadeshi." This initiative is part of broader reforms aimed at making India self-reliant. Modi linked this effort to Mahatma Gandhi's legacy, urging the current generation to complete the mission of promoting swadeshi. He encouraged students to ask themselves how they can contribute to fulfilling the nation's needs, emphasising the importance of connecting personal success with national progress.
Modi also pointed out India's significant expenditure on edible oil imports, which exceeds Rs 1 lakh crore annually. "Even today, we have to import edible oil worth Rs 1 lakh crore. We are an agrarian economy … If this 1 lakh crore had remained inside the country, how many school buildings would have been built, and lives would have been made," he remarked. This highlights the need for self-reliance as a guiding principle for future generations.
Engaging Students in Local Initiatives
Students should be encouraged to bring swadeshi products from home and engage in discussions about them. Modi suggested that students participate in village marches with placards supporting swadeshi products. Such activities aim to create an environment that encourages citizens to use Made in India products and be vocal for local goods. These efforts will nurture patriotism, self-confidence, and respect for labour among youth.
He called on teachers nationwide to instil self-reliance in students using simple language and local dialects. Modi stressed that a nation dependent on others cannot progress as rapidly as its true potential allows. "Every student should ask themselves, What can I do to fulfil any of the needs of my country?" he said, urging them to carry this thought in their hearts.
"Today I am doing the task that you always do, giving homework. I am giving you a homework to lead campaigns to promote swadeshi products. I am confident that you will complete it," Modi stated during his interaction with teachers. By fostering a sense of responsibility towards national needs, these initiatives aim to inspire students to contribute actively to India's growth.
