On April 6, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the New Pamban Bridge, India's first vertical lift railway sea bridge, in Tamil Nadu. This new bridge connects Rameswaram Island to the mainland, replacing the old Pamban Bridge that had been in use for over 100 years.
Construction of the new bridge began in 2020, and it has been built using the latest technology. The bridge has a special feature called a vertical lift span, a 72.5-metre section that can be lifted up to let ships and cargo vessels pass through without stopping train services. This ensures both trains and ships can move freely and safely.
The new bridge helps connect Chennai and Rameswaram more efficiently, especially for pilgrims visiting the holy temple town. It will also make travel faster and more comfortable for tourists and local people. A new train, the Rameswaram-Tambaram Express, has already started running on this route after it was flagged off by PM Modi.

Unlike the old bridge, it has a double-track railway line, which means more trains can run at the same time. The bridge is also equipped with automatic signalling systems for smoother and safer operations. Built using high-quality steel and concrete, it is designed to withstand cyclones and strong winds, making it much more durable. Most impressively, the bridge has been built to last over 100 years.
The Old Pamban Bridge
The old Pamban Bridge, built in 1914, was India's first sea bridge and a major engineering marvel of its time. It connected Rameswaram Island to the mainland of Tamil Nadu and served as a lifeline for both pilgrims and locals. The bridge was 2.06 kilometres long and featured a manually operated double-leaf bascule section in the centre, which could be lifted to allow ships to pass. For over 100 years, it played a crucial role in transportation and tourism. Despite withstanding harsh weather and even a cyclone in 1964, the bridge became outdated for modern trains and heavier loads, leading to the need for the new vertical-lift Pamban Bridge.
