PM Modi Meets Italian, Portuguese, and Indonesian Leaders to Strengthen Bilateral Ties at G20 Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged with global leaders, including those from Italy, Indonesia, and Portugal, during the G20 Summit in Brazil. These discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral relations. Modi arrived in Brazil after a two-day visit to Nigeria. On Monday, he met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to explore ways to strengthen ties in defence, security, trade, and technology.

Strengthening India-Italy Relations
Modi expressed his pleasure in meeting Meloni at the Rio de Janeiro G20 Summit. Their conversation focused on boosting cooperation in culture and education as well. "India-Italy friendship can greatly contribute to a better planet," Modi shared on X. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted their meeting by stating, "Strategic Partnership going strong!" Both leaders endorsed the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29 to further enhance bilateral ties.
Celebrating 75 Years of India-Indonesia Relations
During the summit, Modi also met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. They discussed strengthening ties in commerce, security, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals. "Delighted to meet President Prabowo Subianto during the G20 Summit in Brazil," Modi posted on X. This year marks 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Indonesia. The MEA noted their discussion on expanding the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into new areas.
Enhancing Economic Ties with Portugal
Modi's meeting with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro focused on invigorating economic connections. "Had a very good meeting with Prime Minister of Portugal," Modi posted on X. They explored opportunities in renewable energy and green hydrogen sectors. Discussions also covered defence relations and people-to-people linkages. The MEA emphasised collaboration in multilateral fora as part of strengthening bilateral ties.
Engagements with Other Global Leaders
At the G20 Summit, Modi also interacted with IMF deputy managing director Gita Gopinath. She praised India's achievements in reducing hunger and poverty. "Great to meet Prime Minister @narendramodi at the G20 summit in Rio," Gopinath posted on X. Modi responded by affirming India's commitment to food security and poverty elimination.
Earlier that day, Modi briefly interacted with US President Joe Biden. Details of their conversation remain undisclosed. Additionally, Modi engaged with leaders from Brazil, Singapore, and Spain during the summit's sidelines.
The meetings at the G20 Summit underscored India's commitment to fostering international partnerships across various sectors. These interactions aimed at enhancing cooperation and exploring new avenues for collaboration with different countries.
