Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Donald Trump's resilience and commitment to the US, while addressing India-China relations, advocating for peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and discussing trade negotiations with the US amidst tariff challenges.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently expressed his admiration for Donald Trump's resilience and dedication to the United States. Modi highlighted their shared commitment to putting their nations first, stating, "Even after being shot (July 2024), he remained unwaveringly dedicated to America. His life was for his nation. Trump's will to live and fight for the US even after being shot appeals to me because this showed his America First spirit, just as I believe in Nation First. I stand for India First and that's why I connect so well (with Trump)." This endorsement came during a podcast with Lex Fridman, a popular podcaster and research scientist at MIT.
Modi also addressed India's relationship with China, noting that recent interactions with President Xi Jinping have led to improved conditions at the border. He mentioned that efforts are underway to restore pre-2020 conditions, emphasising dialogue over discord. "Instead of discord, we emphasise dialogue for building cooperative relationship. After my meeting with President Xi, we are seeing a return of normalcy to the border. We are now working to restore conditions to how they were before 2020. Slowly but surely, trust, enthusiasm and energy will return," he said.
India's Stance on Global Issues
The Prime Minister reiterated India's position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, urging both nations to engage in meaningful negotiations. He stated, "I can tell President Putin this is not the era of war. I can also tell President Zelensky that regardless of how many people stand with you, there will never be a resolution on the battlefield." Modi stressed that discussions must involve both parties and expressed concern about the war's impact on the Global South.

On Pakistan, Modi described it as a hub of terrorism but expressed hope for reconciliation. He noted that Indian efforts have been met with hostility but remains optimistic that Pakistan will choose a peaceful path for its people's future.
Trade Relations and Negotiations
India is currently negotiating a trade deal with the United States in hopes of securing an exemption from reciprocal tariffs set for April 2nd. Despite facing challenges from Trump's tariff policies, India remains hopeful for a favourable outcome.
Modi praised Trump's preparedness during his second term, noting his clear roadmap and capable team. The Prime Minister appreciated Trump's trust in him and recalled an instance where Trump ignored security protocols during the 'Howdy Modi' event in Houston.
Commitment to Peace
Addressing questions about his relationship with Trump, Modi emphasised their mutual trust and shared values of prioritising national interests. He stated that he always advocates for India's interests positively without offending others.
Modi clarified his stance on neutrality by asserting his commitment to peace: "I am not neutral. I strive for peace." This statement underscores India's consistent position on fostering diplomatic resolutions rather than conflicts.
The Prime Minister concluded by highlighting the importance of healthy competition between India and China for global stability and prosperity. He believes that while competition is natural, it should not escalate into conflict.
