Built at an estimated cost of around Rs 11,868.6 crore, the expressway has been designed to reduce congestion and improve travel experience along one of North India's busiest routes. The project was initially launched in February 2021 by Nitin Gadkari, with further groundwork carried out later that year.

New Delhi-Dehradun Highway Route and Connectivity

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway begins near the iconic Akshardham Temple in Delhi and extends all the way to Dehradun. Along its route, it passes through several key towns in Uttar Pradesh, including Baghpat, Baraut, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli and Saharanpur.

A dedicated spur will also connect the expressway to Haridwar, offering improved access to one of India's major pilgrimage destinations. Additionally, the expressway integrates with the broader Char Dham Highway network, strengthening connectivity to key religious sites in Uttarakhand.

One of the biggest advantages of the new expressway is the significant reduction in travel time. Currently, the journey between Delhi and Dehradun takes around six hours, depending on traffic conditions.

With the expressway becoming operational, the same journey is expected to be completed in just about two-and-a-half hours. This improvement is likely to benefit daily commuters, tourists, and logistics operators alike.

Toll Charges for Commuters

While the expressway promises speed and convenience, it will come with toll charges. The project includes five toll plazas, though collections are yet to begin.

As per initial estimates, commuters driving cars may need to pay around Rs 670 to Rs 675 for a one-way trip. A round journey within 24 hours could cost over Rs 1,000, making it important for travellers to factor in the cost alongside the time savings.

Key Features of the New Delhi-Dehradun Highway

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway has been developed with several modern features aimed at ensuring a smooth and safe driving experience. It includes seven interchanges to maintain seamless traffic flow, along with two rail overbridges and ten major bridges.

To enhance commuter comfort, authorities are developing 14 wayside amenities along the route. These will include rest areas, food courts, fuel stations, and clean washroom facilities, making long-distance travel more convenient.

Project Timeline and Development

The expressway project was originally slated for completion by December 2024 but has now reached its launch phase.

A Boost to Connectivity and Tourism

The launch of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is expected to provide a major boost to connectivity between Delhi and Uttarakhand. By reducing travel time and improving road quality, the project is likely to encourage tourism, ease freight movement and support regional economic growth.
