PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme: Union Cabinet Allocates Rs. 3,600 Crores For Students; Who Will Benefit? Key Details

In a significant move to promote access to quality higher education, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme, created to provide financial assistance to meritorious students from low-income backgrounds. The scheme is part of the government's ongoing efforts to ensure that deserving students are not held back by financial constraints in order to pursue higher education. The government has allocated Rs. 3,600 crore for this initiative, which is expected to benefit over 22 lakh students every year.

Key Features of the PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme

The PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme aims to provide collateral-free and guarantor-free loans to students from economically weaker families. These loans can cover the course fee and all other expenses occurring during the course at Quality Higher Education Institutions (QHEIs). The scheme is structured to benefit students admitted to top institutions, including both government and private universities, as determined by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

Education-loan

The scheme will cover the top 100 ranked universities and colleges, including government, private, and state institutions ranked 101-200 in the NIRF, along with all central government-run institutions.

Target beneficiaries and loan coverage

The scheme is designed for students with a family income below ₹8 lakhs who don't qualify for other government scholarships, providing loans up to ₹10 lakhs with a 3% interest subsidy. For loans up to Rs. 7.5 lakhs, students will also receive a credit guarantee of 75% on any outstanding defaults, ensuring additional security for both students and financial institutions involved in disbursing the loans.

Expected Impact of the Scheme

The PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme aims to unlock opportunities for students who have the academic potential but lack the financial resources to pursue higher education at the nation's premier institutions. With over 22 lakh students set to benefit, this initiative will help bridge the gap between academic aspirations and financial accessibility, particularly in fields that require significant investment, such as engineering, medicine, and other professional courses.

Additionally, the government's decision to reserve a large portion of the scheme for students from government institutions and those pursuing technical and professional courses underlines the aim to bolster India's human resource development in critical areas.
