Pongal Gift Package 2026 launched

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on January 8 formally launched the Pongal gift package 2026 from Chennai's Alandur area. Under the scheme, the state government is distributing Rs. 3,000 cash along with a Pongal gift hamper to over 2.22 crore rice ration cardholders across Tamil Nadu.

The distribution is being carried out through ration shops between January 8 and January 13, covering both urban and rural regions. The scheme is aimed at supporting low- and middle-income households during the harvest festival.

What does the current Pongal gift package include?

Under the existing Rs.3,000 Pongal gift scheme, beneficiaries receive:
Rs. 3,000 cash, directly handed over at ration shops
1 kg raw rice
1 kg sugar
1 sugarcane
Free dhoti or saree, with officials indicating around 80% utilisatioN

Opposition demands hike to Rs. 5,000.

The opposition AIADMK has demanded that the cash component be raised to Rs. 5,000. Leader of the Opposition Edappadi Palaniswami said the current amount is insufficient given rising inflation and household expenses.

The state government has put in place good arrangements for the smooth distribution of the Tamil Nadu Pongal gift hamper. Tokens for the gift package are distributed door-to-door to avoid overcrowding. Ration shops in hill areas open as early as 6 AM. Police deployment at busy fair-price shops to manage crowds
