Port and Dock Workers' Unions Call Off Indefinite Strike Following Wage Agreement

Port and dock workers unions at major ports have postponed their indefinite strike, which was set to begin on Wednesday, according to official sources. This decision followed a lengthy meeting in the national capital on Tuesday between union representatives and port management, where an agreement was reached regarding workers' demands.

Strike Deferred After Wage Deal

Agreement Details

The agreement includes a fitment benefit of 8.5% on the total basic pay as of December 31, 2021, plus 30% VDA as of January 1, 2022, according to a top port official. This development comes after unions served strike notices to port administrators on August 12.

Background of the Strike

At a national coordination committee meeting in Tuticorn, Tamil Nadu, on August 8, major port workers unions affiliated with five federations decided to go on an indefinite strike from August 28. The strike aimed to press for immediate wage revision and other benefits that have been pending for nearly 32 months.

The federations involved include the All India Port and Dock Workers Federation, Water Transport Workers Federation of India, Indian National Port and Dock Workers Federation, and Port, Dock and Waterfront Workers Federation of India. These federations represent around 20,000 permanent port and dock workers across 12 major ports.

Wage Negotiation Efforts

A Bipartite Wage Negotiations Committee was established by the shipping ministry in March 2021. This committee includes representatives from both port management and federations and is led by Mumbai Port Authority Chairman Rajeev Jalota. Despite meeting seven times over the past 32 months, the committee had not reached an agreement until now.

Sources from the India Port and Dock Workers Federation indicated that major port operators and federations were supposed to sign a five-year wage revision agreement before the previous wage pact expired on December 31, 2021. The delay in reaching this agreement has been a significant point of contention for the workers.

The decision to defer the strike provides temporary relief but highlights ongoing issues within the sector. The resolution of these demands is crucial for maintaining smooth operations at India's major ports.
