Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema called on banks to prioritize the disbursement of Mudra and other loans to startups, particularly those supporting the Scheduled Caste community and women.
On Friday, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema emphasized the significance of meeting targets for disbursing Mudra and other loans to startups in the state by March. He stressed the need to prioritize schemes that empower the Scheduled Caste community and women.

Meeting with Banks to Review Loan Disbursement
Cheema chaired a meeting with representatives from Punjab National Bank (PNB) and other banks, alongside Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjeet Singh Sahney. The meeting aimed to assess the extent of loans provided by these banks for self-employment and startups under various government schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojna (PMMY), Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), and National Urban Livelihood Mission. Nationalized banks are expected to extend loans ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 crore to young entrepreneurs under these schemes.
Encouraging Loans for Small Projects
Cheema highlighted that the Department of Industries and Commerce has written a Demi-official (DO) letter to banks, urging them to facilitate the disbursement of loans for small projects up to Rs 10 lakh to students who have completed Industrial Training Institute (ITI) courses. He expressed optimism that banks would enhance their performance, and he committed to convening another meeting soon to review their progress.
Promoting Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojna
MP Sahney emphasized the importance of banks disbursing loans under all three categories of PMMY – Shishu, Kishore, and Tarun – and not limiting themselves solely to small loans. He shared that during a recent meeting with the Union Finance Minister, assurances were given to intervene if banks faced any challenges in extending these loans to the youth.
Skilling Youth and Empowering Communities
Sahney highlighted the state's efforts in skilling the youth, empowering farmers, and uplifting weaker sections of society. He pointed out that there are approximately 6,300 branches of various banks in Punjab, and if each branch approves at least five loan applications under various schemes, it could positively impact the futures of over 30,000 young individuals in the state.
Punjab's focus on promoting entrepreneurship, empowering marginalized communities, and fostering economic growth is evident through the initiatives discussed in this meeting. By encouraging banks to meet loan disbursement targets and streamlining processes, the state government aims to create opportunities for self-employment, skill development, and overall socio-economic progress.
