Punjab Government Discusses New Policy to Revitalize Agriculture

The Punjab Cabinet convened on Thursday to deliberate on a new agriculture policy for the state. The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann at his official residence, aimed to address the plateauing traditional agriculture sector. A spokesperson from the Chief Minister's Office highlighted the necessity of a robust agriculture policy to enhance food production, conserve groundwater for future generations, and make agriculture profitable.

Focus on Groundwater Conservation

Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, speaking to reporters post-meeting, stressed the urgency of addressing the declining underground water levels. He noted that most blocks in Punjab are now in the danger zone due to difficulties in drawing water. Cheema assured that the new agriculture policy would be announced soon.

The Cabinet also approved an education policy aimed at promoting skill and technical-based education. This initiative is expected to create new employment opportunities for the youth, integrating them into Punjab's socio-economic growth. The spokesperson stated that this policy would significantly transform education in the state, benefiting the youth immensely.

One-Time Settlement Scheme Expansion

In another significant decision, the Cabinet agreed to expand the one-time settlement scheme for pending value-added tax cases. This move aims to benefit traders further. The ongoing scheme has already helped traders substantially, with the state government recovering Rs 164 crore. Formal orders for this expansion will be issued shortly.

The Cabinet also provided relief to goods vehicle and auto rickshaw owners by eliminating the quarterly tax payment process, which had been a source of harassment. Owners of these old commercial vehicles can now pay their taxes annually in a lump sum. Additionally, buyers of new vehicles have been given options to pay taxes for four or eight years with rebates of 10% or 20%, respectively.

The spokesperson emphasised that all major stakeholders would be consulted in formulating the new agriculture policy. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that diverse perspectives are considered, making the policy more effective and comprehensive.
