Punjab CM hikes sugarcane price by Rs 11 per quintal, farmers say its meagre

In a bid to support sugarcane farmers in the state, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced a hike in the sugarcane price by Rs 11 per quintal on Friday. This increase brings the new rate to Rs 391 per quintal, making it the highest in the country. However, farmers' organizations have expressed dissatisfaction with the meager appreciation and have termed the state government's move as a betrayal.

Farmers' Reaction

While the chief minister hailed the price hike as a shubh shagun (good omen) and fulfillment of his promise to farmers, farmer leaders have criticized the increase as too little and a betrayal to their community. Manjit Singh Rai, president of the BKU Doaba farmers' organization, stated that the hike is insufficient and does not meet their expectations. Rai emphasized that farmers had demanded an increase from Rs 380 per quintal to Rs 450 per quintal, and the announced hike falls short of their demands. He warned that farmers will be forced to protest again if their demands are not met.

Sugar Mills Yet to Operate

Adding to the farmers' grievances is the delay in the operation of sugar mills in the state. Gurnam Singh, a leader of various farmers' organizations in the Doaba zone, led a protest and blocked vehicular traffic at Dugri Chowk near Mukerian Sugar Mill. The protestors demanded the immediate operation of sugar mills and expressed dissatisfaction with the meager hike in sugarcane prices. The farmers in the Mukerian belt, who suffered heavy losses due to floods during the rainy season, are still awaiting compensation for their damaged property and crops.

Government's Commitment

Despite the criticism, Chief Minister Mann reiterated his government's commitment to the well-being of all sections of society, including farmers, traders, weaker sections, employees, and others. He promised that in the coming days, good news will be given to other sections of society as well, with the aim of creating a vibrant and prosperous Punjab.

While the sugarcane price hike is a step in the right direction, it has failed to appease the concerns of farmers in Punjab. The state government needs to address the farmers' demands and ensure the timely operation of sugar mills to alleviate their hardships. By prioritizing the well-being of all sections of society, the government can work towards building a prosperous and vibrant Punjab.
