Punjab Govt Makes Historic Purchase of Goindwal Sahib Thermal Power Plant

In a significant move, the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has purchased a 540-megawatt private thermal power plant located in Goindwal Sahib. The power plant, previously owned by GVK Power, a private company, was acquired for an amount of Rs 1,080 crore.

The 540-MW thermal power plant in Goindwal Sahib, Tarn Taran, is an independent power plant spread across 1,100 acres of land. Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) initiated the process of acquiring the plant in July 2022.

In addition to the acquisition, Mann also announced a review of power purchase agreements (PPAs) for the procurement of solar power in Punjab. The available capacity of the plant was previously underutilized, with only 34% of its potential being harnessed. By increasing the utilization rate to 75-80%, the government aims to augment power generation and meet the growing demand within the state.

Termination of Power Purchase Agreements

With the acquisition of this private power plant, one out of three power purchase agreements with private thermal plants has been terminated. This move aligns with the government's strategy to reduce reliance on expensive power purchases and enhance self-sufficiency in power generation.

Utilization of Coal Resources

Chief Minister Mann highlighted the strategic advantage of utilizing coal from the Pachwara coal mine exclusively for government power plants. This will ensure an adequate supply of coal for power generation, benefiting various sectors across the state.
