In a significant move aimed at boosting the agricultural economy and enhancing farmers' incomes in Punjab, the state government has announced plans to export litchis grown in the Pathankot district to international markets. This initiative was revealed by the state Horticulture Minister, Chetan Singh Jouramajra, during a state-level litchi exhibition held in Pathankot.

Pathankot, known for producing the highest quality litchis in Punjab, accounts for 60 per cent of the state's total litchi production. The government's decision to export these litchis is part of a broader strategy to diversify agricultural practices and encourage farmers to adopt horticulture crops over traditional paddy and wheat cultivation. This shift is not only expected to increase farmers' profitability but also address the critical issue of rapidly declining underground water levels in the region.
Jouramajra emphasized the importance of this initiative by stating that special efforts are being made to enhance litchi production and sales in Pathankot, thereby increasing profitability for local farmers. The move to export litchis is seen as a key step towards achieving this goal. The minister also highlighted that approximately 3,900 hectares across Punjab are dedicated to litchi cultivation, with around 2,200 hectares located in Pathankot alone.
To further support litchi cultivation, a dedicated litchi estate has been established at Sujanpur in Pathankot. This facility is expected to play a crucial role in improving production techniques and ensuring high-quality yield, making Pathankot litchis competitive in international markets.
The announcement of exporting the first consignment of litchis abroad marks a significant milestone for the agricultural sector in Punjab. By tapping into international markets, the state government aims to provide a substantial boost to the incomes of farmers and producers in Pathankot, setting a positive precedent for the promotion of horticulture crops across the region.
This initiative reflects the Punjab government's commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and its focus on diversifying income sources for farmers. With plans already underway to export Pathankot's finest litchis, this venture promises to open new avenues for growth and prosperity in Punjab's agricultural sector.
