According to Drik Panchang calculations, the Sankranti moment for Puthandu 2026 will occur at 09:39 AM IST, while the Sun is expected to enter Aries (Mesha Sankranti) around 08:15 AM, which officially begins the new year.
The Vishu Kani Muhurat, considered the most auspicious time to begin the day, is between 04:40 AM and 06:10 AM, during the Brahma Muhurat. On this day, the Tamil Shaka Samvata 1948 will begin in the Tamil calendar.
What is Puthandu and why is it celebrated?
Puthandu is very significant because it is the first day of the Tamil month Chithirai tha symbolises new beginnings & prosperity. It is considered the best time for prayers, family gatherings, and setting positive intentions for the year ahead.

Families arrange a tray with symbolic items such as fruits, flowers, gold, coins, betel leaves, and a mirror, and view it first thing in the morning. This is believed to bring prosperity and good luck throughout the year.
