Railways Suspends Regular Passenger Services Indefinitely; Special Trains To Run

The Indian Railways has suspended all passenger train services till further notice, nonetheless 230 special trains will remain operational. "This is to bring to the notice of all concerned that as decided and informed earlier as well, regular passenger and suburban train services will continue to remain suspended till further notice," said a statement from the Railways.

"It may be noted that 230 Special Trains, which are running at present, will continue to operate. Local trains in Mumbai, which are presently being run on limited basis only on the requisition of state government, will also continue to run," it said.

 

The behemoth further iterated that occupancy of special trains is being watched out for continuously and if required more special trains may be made to operate. Nevertheless, all regular trains and suburban trains plying before the lockdown was enforced will continue to be suspended for the time being, it said.

Special trains include 12 pairs of train running on the Rajdhani route since May 12 and 100 pairs operational since June 1 will be in service. Alongside, the special suburban services which started in Mumbai for transporting personnel from the essential services category will also be extending its services, officials said. Previously, the national carrier suspended regular train services until August 12.

As the passenger train services remain suspended for indefinite period of time until further notice, the carrier estimates a loss to the tune of Rs. 40000 crore in its transport business for the ongoing fiscal.

This extension in suspension of passenger services is being effected at a time when active Covid 19 cases in India stands at 6,39,929, while a total of 15,83,489 individuals have recovered from the virus, as per the Union Health ministry. On Tuesday, 53,601 new Covid 19 cases were identified, taking the total tally to 22,68,675, while death toll stood at 45,257.
