Heated Debate in Rajasthan Assembly on Pearl Millet Procurement Issues

Noisy scenes erupted in the Rajasthan Assembly on Friday over the state government's purchase of pearl millet. Legislators from both ruling and opposition parties exchanged heated remarks. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma intervened, stating that before making allegations, it should be clear who wronged and cheated the farmers.

Rajasthan Millet Procurement Debate

During the Question Hour, independent legislator Ritu Banawat inquired if the state government had any plans to buy pearl millet. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sumit Godara responded that it was a serious issue. He acknowledged that the state government had not purchased pearl millet for a long time but assured that relief would be provided to farmers soon.

Government's Commitment to Farmers

Godara emphasised, "When Congress was in power and we asked about millet purchases, no action was taken. Your Chief Minister was there for 15 years; did Congress ever buy millet? Have you bought your millet in the last five years? We have more focus on farmers." This statement led to further shouting between legislators from both sides.

Expressing his displeasure over the uproar, Speaker Vasudev Devnani suggested moving a proposal to expel those causing disruptions. Later, during Zero Hour, he allowed Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma to address the House.

Chief Minister's Address

Targeting the Congress, Sharma said those asking questions should also listen to the answers. He stated, "After our government was formed, the first millet crop will come. But consider how much millet was purchased in five years?" He added that a letter had been sent to the Central Government to purchase the upcoming millet crop at MSP.

Sharma highlighted that during the previous Congress government, protests occurred because farmers in Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh received Rs 2,300 per quintal for millet. In contrast, Rajasthan farmers were forced to sell at Rs 1,400-1,500 per quintal.

The Chief Minister reiterated that their government would fulfil its promises and provide benefits for millet. "The minister's answer was clear; our government will do what it says," Sharma added.

Speaker's Directives

Following Sharma's reply, Speaker Devnani directed that no members should enter the well of the House. He asked the parliamentary affairs minister to take cognisance and bring a proposal to expel disruptive members if necessary.

Later, Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully also shared his views on the issue. The House proceedings then continued smoothly without further disruptions.
