RBI Grants Payment Aggregator Licenses To Fintech Pioneers Razorpay, Cashfree And More

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given the green light to several prominent entities, including Razorpay, Cashfree Payments, Open Money, and EnKash, by granting them Payment Aggregator (PA) licenses on Tuesday, December 19. This marks a significant development in the landscape of digital payments, highlighting a new era of compliance and regulation in the fintech sector.

Cashfree Payments, in a statement released following the announcement, expressed its elation at securing the coveted PA license. The company sees this as a pivotal moment, underscoring commitment to compliance and emphasizing the importance of a well-regulated payments ecosystem.

"Securing the Payment Aggregator (PA) license from the RBI is a pivotal moment for Cashfree Payments, affirming our focus on compliance and highlighting the significance of a well-regulated payments landscape," the statement declared.

The company is wasting no time in leveraging this achievement and has already begun onboarding new merchants onto its payment gateway. The statement further emphasized their excitement for the new phase ahead, where they aim to sustain exponential growth and maintain their market leadership as the preferred aggregator in the payments space.

Similarly, Razorpay, another major player in the fintech industry, announced that they have received the final authorization from the RBI to operate as a Payment Aggregator under the Payment Settlements Act, 2007. A spokesperson for Razorpay underlined the significance of this milestone and conveyed the company's readiness to onboard new businesses onto its Payment Gateway platform.

"We have great news to share with you! We are now open to onboarding new businesses on our Payment Gateway platform! Razorpay has received the final authorization from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate as a Payment Aggregator (PA) under the Payment Settlements Act, 2007," the spokesperson declared.

With the new PA license in hand, Razorpay is poised to restart onboarding new customers and is committed to serving them with industry-first payment solutions. The company expressed delight in being among the first Payment Gateways to receive the final PA license from the RBI.

This development comes precisely a year after the RBI temporarily halted companies from onboarding merchants until they obtained the final nod for the PA license. The one-year hiatus underscores the meticulous scrutiny applied by the regulatory authorities, ensuring that companies comply with the required standards before continuing their operations.

The RBI introduced the payment aggregator framework in March 2020, mandating that payment gateways obtain a license to acquire merchants and provide digital payment acceptance solutions. This regulatory framework is designed to safeguard the interests of both consumers and businesses, ensuring that payment intermediaries adhere to specified standards.

This move by the RBI signifies a strong commitment to fostering a secure and regulated digital payments environment. As India continues its rapid digitization, the granting of PA licenses is pivotal for payment gateways to not only resume their operations but also to thrive in an environment that prioritizes the highest standards of compliance.

Industry experts anticipate that this regulatory green light will not only boost the confidence of consumers but also attract new businesses looking for secure and compliant payment solutions.
