Red Alert: IMD Predicts Flood-Like Rains in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu This Week; Businesses On High Alert

Weather news: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for multiple regions across India as the southwest monsoon rapidly approaches, triggering a week-long spell of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, lightning, gusty winds, and squalls.

The monsoon arrives early in India this year, but it brings danger. According to the IMD's latest advisory issued on May 25, the southwest monsoon has advanced into key parts of Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, and several northeastern states, including Mizoram and Manipur. Conditions are highly favourable for further spread into Mumbai, Bengaluru, Andhra Pradesh, and additional northeastern regions over the next 72 hours.

The weather report mentioned that a well-marked low-pressure area over Madhya Maharashtra is expected to intensify rainfall across peninsular India, especially affecting Kerala, coastal and interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Konkan-Goa, and parts of Gujarat and Northeast India.

Region-Wise Weather Alerts and Risks

Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu: Extremely heavy rain (204.4+ mm/day) until May 31. High risk of landslides, flash floods, and road blockages.

Konkan-Goa, Maharashtra: Continuous very heavy rainfall is expected to disrupt transportation, supply chains, and port operations.

Northeast India (Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Assam): Heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity with strong gusts up to 70 km/h from May 31.

Rajasthan & Delhi NCR: Heatwave conditions may persist in western regions while NCR braces for thunderstorms, dust storms, and gusty winds up to 50 km/h.

How Businesses Will Be Impacted By Heavy Rains

Agriculture

Monsoon is very crucial for India's agricultural sector and is often one of the most impacted businesses, as standing crops and horticulture across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Northeast India are at severe risk of damage due to waterlogging and hailstorms. However, early monsoon is often a good sign for kharif crops, which are sown during June and harvested in September.

Transport & Logistics

Urban flooding likely in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi, and Imphal may cause major traffic disruptions, delivery delays, and temporary shutdowns. One of the major problems is Bengaluru traffic, which becomes worse during the rainy season. Bengaluru rains have been infamous for wreaking havoc, which can be seen this year as well. Even in Mumbai monsoon has caused a lot of disruptions for people living in slums, as flooding situations are quite prevalent.

Another major issue is the landslides in hilly terrain like Nilgiris and Wayanad in Kerala could cut off road connectivity to key commercial areas.

Construction & Real Estate

Adverse weather conditions can halt operations in ongoing projects in affected regions that could face halted operations due to rain-related hazards.

Risks of damage to under-construction structures and machinery are high, particularly in exposed hill stations.

Power & Telecom

Breakage of power lines and network infrastructure is expected due to strong winds and falling trees. Businesses must prepare for electricity outages and internet disruptions, especially in rural and semi-urban belts.

Retail & Manufacturing

Retail footfalls are likely to decline amid poor weather, especially in non-essential categories.
Manufacturing hubs in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka must brace for potential shutdowns or slowdowns due to absenteeism and disrupted logistics.

IMD Issues Safety and Guidelines

The IMD has strictly advised fishermen not to venture into the Central and South Arabian Sea, as cyclonic conditions can pose extreme life-threatening hazards to maritime activities. Lakshadweep, Kerala, and Karnataka coastlines, Gulf of Mannar, Tamil Nadu, and Sri Lanka coast are also to be avoided during this time.

It's better to avoid travel to flood-prone or low-lying areas and stay indoors during thunderstorms and unplug electronics.

People should stock up on essentials and update emergency contacts.

With red and orange alerts issued across multiple states, both citizens and businesses must remain on high alert for the next 7 days. Business owners should revisit their disaster preparedness SOPs and ensure employee safety protocols are in place.
