The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Karnataka for July 20, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state's coastal regions. According to the latest Bengaluru weather update, the city is also likely to see persistent showers along with thunderstorms later in the day.
The active monsoon system is moving across southern India and is triggering widespread rainfall warnings in Karnataka, especially in the Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada districts.
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre on its official X handle issued the alert stating, "Scattered to widespread moderate rainfall is likely over the coastal and Malnad districts of the state, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places and the heaviest rainfall expected over the coastal districts today. Scattered to widespread rainfall over the interior districts."
Bengaluru Weather Today
Residents of Bengaluru woke up to overcast skies and intermittent rainfall, which is expected to continue throughout the day. The IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rain in Bengaluru along with thunderstorms in Bengaluru through the evening.
Authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors during intense rain spells and avoid waterlogged or low-lying areas.

IMD Alert: Red Alert for Coastal Karnataka
Coastal areas, including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kodagu, are under the highest-level warning due to anticipated heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Yesterday, Dakshina Kannada recorded heavy showers, especially in Mangaluru, which experienced 55.4 mm of rainfall, leading to infrastructure damage and people taking precautionary measures.
Safety Precautions Amid Heavy Rainfall
As per forecasts, the July 20 weather pattern is likely to stay active over southern India, with intense rainfall in parts of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. The Bengaluru weather is expected to remain cloudy with showers continuing intermittently for the next 24-48 hours. Authorities have recommended following safety precautions during rain:
Avoid stepping out unless necessary during peak rain hours.
Stay away from waterlogged streets and avoid driving through flooded areas.
Secure loose outdoor items to prevent wind damage.
Residents near water bodies and fishermen should be extra careful.
