Red alert in Kerala: Monsoon Holiday Announced for Schools & Colleges in Kasaragod and Wayanad From This Date
The southwest monsoon has finally set its foot in India and has intensified across Kerala, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to several parts of the state. IMD weather forecasts which say extremely heavy rain and a red alert in northern districts, authorities have declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Kasaragod and Wayanad on June 6.

The monsoon holiday has been announced as a precautionary measure for the safety of students and staff as the India Meteorological Department has warned of intense rainfall in the region.
Schools and Colleges to Remain Closed
According to district authorities, all educational institutions in Kasaragod and Wayanad districts will remain closed on Saturday due to the red alert and continuing heavy rainfall.
The closure applies to schools, colleges, professional colleges, Kendriya Vidyalayas, tuition centres and religious educational institutions, including Madrasas.
However, officials clarified that the holiday order will not apply to residential schools in Wayanad district, which will continue functioning as usual.
Red Alert Issued in Kerala Due to Heavy Monsoon
Kerala is currently in an active phase of the southwest monsoon, locally known as Edavappathy. The monsoon, which typically arrives around June 1 every year, has now strengthened across the state, leading to widespread rainfall and waterlogging in several areas.
The southwest monsoon is Kerala's primary rainy season and contributes nearly 75% of the state's annual rainfall. It generally lasts from June to September, with June, July and August being the wettest months.
Heavy rains have already been reported from multiple districts, with low-lying areas in Kochi and Kozhikode experiencing waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
Tourism Activities Suspended in Meppadi
As reported by Asia net, authorities have also imposed strict restrictions in Meppadi, one of Wayanad's popular tourist destinations, as rainfall continues to intensify. The district administration has ordered a complete ban on tourism activities within the limits of Meppadi Grama Panchayat on June 6 and June 7.
Authorities Urge Residents to Stay Alert
District administrations have advised residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas and closely follow weather updates issued by authorities.
With a red alert in place and forecasts indicating more heavy rainfall over the coming days, officials are monitoring the situation closely and have urged people living in low-lying and landslide-prone regions to remain vigilant.
