Red Alert On Delhi-NCR; Severe Rain, Strong Winds, Waterlogging Disrupting The City; Check IMD Weather Update

Delhi Weather Update: A red issue has been alerted in the Delhi-NCR region as intense rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds lash into the city in the early hours of Friday, May 2nd. This led to waterlogging and disruption to transportation. Airlines have already taken a hit at the airport and had to divert their flights due to strong winds.

Delhi Weather On May 2:

Although the weather brought relief from intense heat, its severity has disrupted day-to-day commuting and businesses in Delhi. Water logging has been reported in areas like Dwarka Underpass, South Extension, Ring Road, Minto Road, RK Puram, and Lajpat Nagar.

Also, heavy rains with strong winds caused chaos at Delhi airport, with a metal structure collapsing at Terminal-3, according to reports. About 40 flights had to divert, while nearly 100 were delayed.

According to IMD's latest update on X, squally winds in gust were recorded at during 0530-0550 Pragati Maidan 78 kmph; Lodhi Road 59 kmph; Pitam Pura 59 kmph; Nazafgarh 56 kmph; IGNOU 52 kmph; and Palam 62 kmph.

Moderate to intense spells were reported over Delhi, IMD said.

Red Alert Issued In Delhi:

IMD warns about the continuation of severe thunderstorms and squally winds between 70 and 80 mph over the next few hours. Accordingly, IMD issued a red alert for the national capital.

Alert Of Severe Weather over Delhi NCR and its Impact:

Due to severe weather, IMD expects the following impact in Delhi-NCR:

- Breaking of tree branches, uprooting of large avenue trees. Large dead limbs were blown from trees, and damage to standing crops.

- Minor to major damages to banana and papaya trees.

- Minor to major damages to power and communication lines due to the breaking of branches.

- Strong wind, and hail, may damage plantations, horticulture and standing crops.

- Hail may injure people and cattle at open places.

- Partial damage to vulnerable structures due to strong winds.

- Minor damages to kutcha houses/walls and huts

- Loose objects may fly.

Actions Suggested In Severe Weather Conditions:

IMD has urged the citizens of Delhi-NCR to take precautionary measures on May 2. These are:

- People are advised to keep a watch on the weather for worsening conditions and be ready to move to safer places accordingly.

- Stay indoors, close windows and doors, and avoid travelling if possible.

- Take safe shelter, and do not take shelter under trees.

- Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.

- Unplug electrical/electronic appliances.

- Immediately get out of water bodies. Keep away from all the objects that conduct electricity.

Skymet Weather Forecast For May in Delhi:

As per its report, Skymet revealed that the month of May is usually considered the hottest, but this time its beginning will be a relief. In the first week, the day temperature will remain below normal and there will be thunderstorms in between, which will make the weather comfortable.

For the next few days, Skymet expects thunderstorms and dust storms over Delhi due to cyclonic winds in western Rajasthan and border areas of Pakistan.

Skymet said, that soon a western disturbance will reach the hilly areas. Due to its effect, an area of cyclonic winds will form in western Rajasthan and the border areas of Pakistan. An east-west direction trough from this system will pass close to Delhi, due to which there will be chances of thunderstorms and dust storms in Delhi/NCR between 1 and 8 May. This activity may occur intermittently for a few days, but this will be a long period of pre-monsoon season.
