Reliance Jio, Airtel Gain Mobile Subscribers in September, While Vodafone Idea Loses
Reliance Jio added 34.7 lakh mobile subscribers in September, cementing its lead in the competitive telecom market, while Airtels wireless subscriber tally rose by 13.2 lakh. Vodafone Idea lost 7.5 lakh mobile subscribers during the same period.
In a competitive telecom market, Reliance Jio has further solidified its lead by adding 34.7 lakh new mobile subscribers in September, according to the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Meanwhile, Airtel witnessed a modest increase of 13.2 lakh wireless subscribers, while Vodafone Idea suffered a loss of 7.5 lakh subscribers during the same period.
Jio's Steady Growth
Reliance Jio's consistent growth trajectory continued in September, as it gained an impressive 34.75 lakh wireless subscribers, taking its total user base to a substantial 44.92 crore. This surge in subscribers highlights Jio's strong position in the market and its ability to attract customers with its competitive offerings.
Airtel's Gradual Increase
Bharti Airtel also experienced growth in its mobile subscriber base, adding 13.2 lakh users in September. This gradual increase brought Airtel's total wireless subscriber tally to 37.77 crore, indicating a steady performance despite the intense competition in the industry.
Vodafone Idea's Struggles
In contrast to Jio and Airtel's gains, Vodafone Idea faced challenges in September, losing 7.5 lakh mobile subscribers. This decline further reduced its wireless user tally to 22.75 crore, reflecting the company's ongoing struggles in the highly competitive telecom landscape.
Overall Subscriber Growth
Despite the varying fortunes of individual operators, the overall wireless subscriber base in India continued to grow. As of the end of September 2023, the total number of wireless subscribers reached 1,150.15 million, registering a modest monthly growth rate of 0.15 percent.
Urban and Rural Subscription Trends
The growth in wireless subscriptions was observed in both urban and rural areas. In urban areas, the number of wireless subscribers increased to 630.17 million, while in rural areas, it rose to 519.99 million during the same period. The monthly growth rate for urban and rural wireless subscriptions stood at 0.12 percent and 0.18 percent, respectively.
Broadband Subscribers on the Rise
In addition to wireless subscriptions, the total number of broadband subscribers in India also witnessed an increase. By the end of September 2023, the total broadband subscriber base reached 885 million, up from 876.53 million at the end of August 2023. This growth represents a healthy monthly growth rate of 0.97 percent.
Market Share of Top Service Providers
The top five service providers in the broadband market collectively held a significant 98.35 percent market share as of September 2023. Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd led the pack with 458.96 million subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel with 257.59 million, Vodafone Idea with 126.51 million, and BSNL with 25.12 million subscribers.
Leading Wired and Wireless Broadband Providers
In the wired broadband segment, Reliance Jio Infocomm emerged as the top service provider with 9.75 million subscribers, while Bharti Airtel and BSNL followed with 7.03 million and 3.71 million subscribers, respectively. In the wireless broadband segment, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd dominated with a massive 449.21 million subscribers, significantly ahead of Bharti Airtel's 250.57 million and Vodafone Idea's 126.50 million subscribers.
The latest TRAI data provides insights into the dynamic state of India's telecom industry. While Reliance Jio maintains its dominance and Airtel shows steady growth, Vodafone Idea faces challenges in retaining its subscriber base.
