The recent move by Reliance Jio to discontinue its entry-level 28-day prepaid plan has sent ripples across the Indian telecom industry, putting pressure on competitors Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) to either follow suit or maintain their current pricing strategies.
Jio Discontinues Entry-level Data Plan of Rs 249: Know Affect on Jio Users' Pockets
As of August 18, Jio has scrapped its Rs 249 plan, which offered 1 GB of data per day for 28 days a plan widely seen as the most basic and affordable choice for many of its subscribers. With this change, the most affordable option now available on Jio's website is the Rs 299 plan offering 1.5 GB per day for 28 days, effectively raising the minimum monthly cost for Jio users by Rs 50.

This strategic realignment of Jio's prepaid plans appears to be aimed at increasing Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), a key profitability metric in the telecom sector. By eliminating the lower-data, lower-cost options, Jio is nudging users toward higher-value packs.
For instance, subscribers now seeking more data or better value for money might be drawn to Jio's 2 GB/day, 28-day pack priced at Rs 349. It's evident that Jio is tightening its tariff structure to gradually push the base-level customer toward higher revenue-generating plans.
Reliance Jio Rs 249 Recharge Plan Stopped: Will Airtel, Vodafone Idea or BSNL Hike Mobile Tariff Plans?
The ripple effect of Jio's move is expected to reach Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Historically, when one major telecom player revises its tariff structure, rivals tend to follow to stay competitive while avoiding a price war.
Airtel's vice chairman Gopal Vittal recently emphasised the need for "tariff repair" to ensure sustainable returns on capital employed - a sentiment that suggests Airtel may not shy away from price hikes if the market permits. With Jio having already taken the lead, Airtel now has a potentially favorable environment to make similar adjustments without being the first mover.
Currently, both Airtel and Vodafone Idea still offer the 1 GB/day, 28-day plan at Rs 299, making them marginally more expensive than Jio's now-discontinued Rs 249 option but aligned with Jio's new pricing. Their 1.5 GB/day plans are priced at Rs 349, and 2 GB/day plans at Rs 408 (Vi) and Rs 399 (Airtel), placing them at a slight premium compared to Jio's offerings. This price alignment across the top telecom players could indicate a coordinated move toward tariff consolidation in the industry.
BSNL Offers More Affordable Recharge Plans
On the other hand, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) remains a significant outlier in terms of pricing. BSNL continues to offer considerably more affordable plans - for example, a 30-day, 1.5 GB/day pack at just Rs 141 and a 2.2 GB/day plan at Rs 148.
However, BSNL's limited 4G coverage and lack of competitive network quality keep it from being a mainstream alternative for most urban and semi-urban users. While BSNL's plans offer value on paper, network quality and service reliability continue to be concerns that prevent it from posing a serious threat to the private players.
