India's Renewable Energy Capacity Increases by 13.5% to Reach 203 GW in October 2024

India's renewable energy capacity reached 203.18 GW in October 2024, up from 178.98 GW in October 2023, marking a 13.5% increase. This growth supports India's renewable energy goals, according to the New and Renewable Energy Ministry. Including nuclear power, the total non-fossil fuel capacity rose to 211.36 GW in 2024, compared to 186.46 GW the previous year.

Indias Renewable Energy Capacity Hits 203 GW

From April to October 2024, India added 12.6 GW of renewable energy capacity. In October alone, the country installed 1.72 GW, highlighting a rapid shift towards renewable sources. The projects under implementation and tendered expanded significantly, with 143.94 GW under implementation and 89.69 GW tendered by October 2024.

Solar and Wind Energy Growth

The solar sector experienced a substantial increase of 20.1 GW or 27.9%, growing from 72.02 GW in October 2023 to 92.12 GW in October 2024. The total solar capacity, including ongoing and planned projects, now stands at 250.57 GW, a notable rise from last year's 166.49 GW.

Wind energy also showed steady progress with a growth of 7.8%. Its installed capacity increased from 44.29 GW in October 2023 to reach 47.72 GW in October 2024. The total wind project capacity in the pipeline has now reached an impressive figure of 72.35 GW.

Large Hydro and Nuclear Contributions

As of October 2024, large hydro projects contributed significantly to India's renewable energy mix with a capacity of 46.93 GW. Meanwhile, nuclear power added another dimension to the non-fossil fuel portfolio with a capacity of 8.18 GW.

The renewable energy projects under implementation and those tendered have seen considerable growth compared to the previous year. In October 2023, there were only 99.08 GW under implementation and 55.13 GW tendered, indicating consistent progress towards India's clean energy objectives.

This expansion aligns with India's ambitious targets for increasing its renewable energy capacity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The country's efforts are evident in the significant increases across various sectors within the renewable energy landscape.
