Engineering Curriculum Revamp Needed to Align with Industry: Amitabh Kant

In a significant move towards enhancing India's engineering education and aligning it with current industry demands, G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant emphasized the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the curriculum in engineering colleges and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Speaking at the India Global Innovation Connect (IGIC) 2024 event in Bengaluru, Kant highlighted the critical gap between the skills produced by these institutions and the requirements of today's industries, particularly in high-demand areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and cybersecurity.

Revamp Engineering Studies for Industry

According to Kant, there is an "urgent need" to bridge this gap and increase the pool of skilled engineers in India to meet the demands of modern industries. He pointed out that the government's focus for the next five years would be on skilling and apprenticeship programs to generate a vast number of new job opportunities. Furthermore, Kant stressed India's potential to become a global innovation hub, which necessitates a transformative approach towards research and development (R&D).

In light of this, the government plans to introduce a substantial Rs 1 lakh crore fund within the next 3-4 months to boost R&D efforts across the country. This initiative aims to elevate India's position in manufacturing, especially in semiconductor fabrication, with Karnataka's Mysore belt identified as having the best ecosystem for such manufacturing capabilities in India.

Additionally, Darshan H.V., Managing Director at the Department of Electronics, Information Technology Biotechnology and Science & Technology, echoed the importance of technology as the future. He emphasized supporting entrepreneurs and startups in leveraging technology for innovation and development. Claude Smadja, Chairman of Smadja & Smadja Strategic Advisory, also commented on India's progress in deep tech, health tech, semiconductors, and aerospace technologies. He noted that while India has been focused on innovation and supporting startups, the challenge now lies in scaling these efforts to new heights.

The consensus among speakers at the IGIC 2024 event was clear: for India to maintain its competitive edge on the global stage, a significant shift in educational focus and government policy is essential. This includes not only revamping engineering curricula to meet contemporary industrial demands but also fostering an environment conducive to research, innovation, and technological advancement.
