RINL Requests Andhra Pradesh Govt's Aid for Coking Coal from Adani Port

In a recent development that underscores the critical challenges faced by the steel industry, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), based in Andhra Pradesh, has reached out to the state government seeking intervention to secure the immediate supply of coking coal. This essential raw material has been marooned at Adani Gangavaram Port since April 12, owing to a workers' agitation at AGPL (Adani Gangavaram Port Limited), an entity operated by the Adani Ports and SEZ (APSEZ).

RINL Seeks Govt Help for Coal Supply

RINL's CMD, Atul Bhatt, in a communication to the Visakhapatnam district collector, highlighted the dire straits the company finds itself in due to the unavailability of coking coal. The standoff has placed RINL's operations in jeopardy, with Bhatt emphasizing the urgency of the situation and requesting district administration and police support to ensure the peaceful transfer of coal using RINL's resources.

Despite efforts, including dialogue between over 1,000 RINL employees and AGPL workers, the deadlock persists. Bhatt expressed concern over court orders regarding coal transportation to RINL, which remain unimplemented. This impasse threatens not just the operational continuity of RINL but also its financial stability, as it struggles to meet statutory payment obligations.

RINL, a prominent player under the Union steel ministry and one of India's top six steelmakers, operates three blast furnaces with a capacity of 2.5 million tonnes each. The scarcity of coking coal, indispensable for steel manufacturing, has forced RINL into reducing its operations significantly.

The ongoing situation at Gangavaram Port not only highlights the logistical vulnerabilities faced by major industrial entities like RINL but also casts a shadow over their operational efficiency and financial health. With no immediate resolution in sight, the standoff at Adani Gangavaram Port continues to be a matter of grave concern for stakeholders within and beyond Andhra Pradesh.
