Rashtriya Kisan Progressive Association (RKPA) voiced concerns over the prevalence of substandard and spurious pesticides in the Indian market, emphasizing their detrimental effects on farm productivity. RKPA criticized industry bodies for presenting misleading data and called for transparency and accountability to protect farmers interests.
New Delhi, March 8: The Rashtriya Kisan Progressive Association (RKPA) has expressed deep concern over the rampant supply of sub-standard and spurious pesticides in the Indian market. The association, which works for the welfare and progress of farmers across the country, highlighted the detrimental impact of such farm inputs on agricultural productivity.

Widespread Use of Low-Quality Inputs
Binod Anand, National President of RKPA, addressed reporters in New Delhi and emphasized that while India's agricultural productivity has witnessed a significant increase since 1950, the per acre yield remains considerably lower compared to many developed and developing nations. He identified the widespread use of low-quality inputs, including agrochemicals, as a major contributing factor to this yield gap.
Misleading Information from Industry Bodies
Anand also criticized certain industry bodies for presenting misleading information regarding the prevalence of spurious pesticides in the country. He strongly condemned the underestimation of the problem, stating that some vested interests audaciously claim that sub-standard products account for only 2% of the overall Indian market. Anand denounced this as a blatant attempt to mislead and deceive farmers.
Devastating Impact on Farmers and Consumers
Anand cited a specific instance from 2021, where approximately 9 lakh acres of chilli crops in a southern state suffered severe damage primarily due to the application of sub-lethal doses of sub-standard pesticides. He emphasized that farmers and consumers bear the brunt of such malpractices, and called for strict action against the culprits responsible for this menace. Anand expressed dismay that vested interests continue to strengthen these elements by presenting a distorted picture of the situation.
Discrepancies in Sampling
Pawan Payal, National General Secretary of RKPA, shed light on another crucial aspect contributing to the flourishing market for sub-standard pesticides in India. He pointed out discrepancies in sampling practices from pesticide dealers and retailers, which allow sub-standard products to slip through the cracks and reach farmers.
About Rashtriya Kisan Progressive Association
Headquartered in Nawada, Bihar, the Rashtriya Kisan Progressive Association is a consortium of national progressive farmers' organizations. With a presence in 16 states and boasting over 1.37 lakh farmer members, RKPA is dedicated to advocating for the rights and welfare of farmers across India.
The RKPA's concerns over the supply of sub-standard pesticides in India highlight a critical issue that affects the livelihoods of farmers and the quality of agricultural produce. By shedding light on this problem and calling for stringent measures against those responsible, the association aims to protect the interests of farmers and ensure sustainable agricultural practices in the country.
