Nirmala Sitharaman Advocates for Comprehensive Reforms in Multilateral Development Banks to Support Emerging Economies

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has emphasised the importance of reforming Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) to address the increasing demands of emerging economies. She highlighted that the Bretton Woods institutions must avoid deviating from their mission and ensure that IMF resources are accessible to all nations. These remarks were made during a panel discussion hosted by the Centre for Global Development.

Sitharaman Calls for MDB Reforms

The Bretton Woods Institutions, comprising the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group, were established in 1944 in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, USA. Sitharaman arrived on Tuesday afternoon to participate in the annual meetings of these institutions. She stressed the necessity of a reform roadmap for these organisations, initiated during India's G20 Presidency after considerable reflection.

Focus on Core Competencies

Sitharaman stated that multilateral institutions should concentrate on their core strengths and enhance themselves for global benefit. She mentioned that shaping the future is an ambitious goal that requires the active involvement of Bretton Woods institutions. The minister also pointed out the slow processes of the IMF, noting that India has provided financial aid to neighbouring countries in distress without conditions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously stated that India's priority is not to impose dominance. Sitharaman reiterated this by saying India follows a policy of strategic and peaceful multilateralism, consistently supporting multilateral institutions. She added that ownership does not solely depend on financial contributions but also on transparent decision-making that benefits recipients.

Support for Global South

India has extended Lines of Credit at highly discounted rates to several African nations for infrastructure development, including building institutions, bridges, railway stations, ports, and secretariats. Sitharaman affirmed India's commitment to continue supporting these countries, believing in solidarity with the Global South.

The minister concluded by stating that decisions should be made through consultation and transparency, ensuring they benefit recipients rather than focusing solely on donors. This approach aligns with India's broader strategy of fostering cooperation and mutual benefit among nations.
