The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that the exchange of Rs 2,000 notes will not be available on January 12 at the RBI's Mumbai Regional Office due to operational considerations. The central bank said that Rs 2,000 notes can be exchanged on Monday as the facility will resume on January 15, 2024, which is the next working day.
In May last year, the RBI announced the withdrawal of the high-value denomination banknotes from circulation as part of its clean note policy.
The deadline to deposit and/or exchange the Rs 2,000 banknotes was October 07, 2023, after that individuals can exchange Rs 2000 banknotes at the 19 Issue Offices of the Reserve Bank (RBI Issue Offices). From October 09, 2023, RBI Issue Offices started accepting Rs 2,000 banknotes from individuals/entities for deposit into their bank accounts, the RBI said in a release.

When is the last date for the exchange of Rs 2000 banknotes?
The facility for deposit /exchange of Rs 2000 banknotes at the 19 RBI Issue Offices shall be available until further advice.
Notably, in November 2016, the RBI introduced Rs 2,000 banknotes to meet the currency requirement of the economy following the withdrawal of the legal tender status of all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes in circulation at that time.
What is Clean Note Policy?
According to the RBI FAQs, "It is a policy adopted by RBI to ensure availability of good quality banknotes to members of the public."
Why are Rs 2000 denomination banknotes being withdrawn?
The Rs 2000 denomination banknote was introduced in November 2016 under Section 24(1) of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934 (RBI Act) primarily to meet the currency requirement of the economy in an expeditious manner after withdrawal of the legal tender status of all Rs 500 and Rs 1000 banknotes in circulation at that time. With fulfillment of that objective and the availability of banknotes in other denominations in adequate quantities, the printing of Rs 2000 banknotes was stopped in 2018-19.
A majority of the Rs 2000 banknotes were issued prior to March 2017 and are at the end of their estimated life-span of 4-5 years. It has also been observed that this denomination is not commonly used for transactions. Further, the stock of banknotes in other denominations continues to be adequate to meet the currency requirement of the public.
In view of the above, and in pursuance of the "Clean Note Policy" of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), it has been decided to withdraw the Rs 2000 denomination banknote from circulation.
Can Rs 2000 banknotes be exchanged through Business Correspondents (BCs)?
Exchange of Rs 2000 banknotes can be made through BCs up to a limit of Rs 4,000/- per day for an account holder.
