Senior officials from Samsung met with Tamil Nadu's Minister for Industries, TRB Rajaa, to address the ongoing labour strike at their Sriperumbudur factory. The meeting followed Chief Minister M K Stalin's directive to resolve the issue promptly. Since September 9, around 1,100 of the 1,750 employees have been on strike, demanding pay revisions and improved working conditions.

The striking workers are also seeking state government registration for the Samsung India Workers Union, supported by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). In response to the situation, Stalin instructed ministers Rajaa, T M Anbarasan (MSME), and C V Ganesan (Labour Welfare and Skill Development) to engage in discussions with both management and employees to end the strike swiftly.
Efforts for Resolution
Rajaa shared on social media that he met with Samsung's management to discuss resolving the issues quickly. He mentioned that Chief Minister Stalin had directed him and Minister Anbarasan to support Minister Ganesan in achieving a positive resolution. "We are confident that Samsung's management and their employees will come together and arrive at an amicable solution that benefits everyone involved," Rajaa stated.
On October 5, several Left party members, including state leaders, were detained during a demonstration near the factory. They were showing support for the striking workers without police permission. Meanwhile, Samsung India expressed its commitment to resolving issues related to wages, benefits, and working conditions through direct negotiations with workers.
Company's Standpoint
A spokesperson for Samsung India emphasised their dedication to employee welfare and compliance with national laws. "At Samsung India, the welfare of our employees is our top priority. We want to reiterate that we comply with all laws and regulations of the country," said the spokesperson.
The company has managed to normalise production at its Chennai plant despite the strike. They assured there would be no disruption for consumers during the festive season. "We again urge the striking workers to return to work," added the spokesperson.
Samsung manufactures consumer electronics like refrigerators, washing machines, and televisions at this facility. The company remains focused on addressing employee concerns while maintaining production stability.
